Adepta Sororitas by riordan-j-flynn Adepta Sororitas by riordan-j-flynn
Sister of Battle, Warhammer 40k.

60+ hours. (I've lost count.)
Paint Tool SAI (primary)
Photoshop CS-4 (image balancing, textures and background)
Wacom Intuos III

This is probably one of the most involved images I have ever created. I have spent some long hours obsessing, painting, repainting over this thing. I love the Sisters of Battle, and I love the Grey Knights, so I decided to merge their armor a little and see what happened. This image is the result. There was a lot of time spent squinting at my Grey Knights miniatures.

Full view, please, there are lots of little details in the armor.

Well, you need to have a tablet and an understanding of how Photoshop works with layer modes and stuff. ^^ And mostly, you just practice a lot and spend lots and lots of time looking at armor!

nice one, but the sword needs to be longer and the handle shorter- better the sword leave the picture then look like a "twohanded shortsword" :D

This is pretty old. I've been meaning to go back in photoshop and tweak that but I'm lazy.

She's also wearing Grey Knight armor. ;)

Extremely well done, love the detail. However she isn't a Sororitas. She is wearing Grey Knight Armor, albeit female GK but GK none the less. That being said I love the attitude and the hair.

Very good! I liked the Grey Knight armor much better than the regular Sister of Battle armor.

Unfortunately, there are no female Grey Knights that I know of, so... >_>

Thank you very much for the compliments. :)

she is the first of a new round of initiates. she proved that she can hack it with the boys but could not receive the gene enhancements like the other grey knights as it is not designed for females. Her rage more than makes up for it though.

Yeah, I should have made it longer. XD

I could spend another 60 hours on this and still probably not be happy with it. >_>

YAY!! That elbow reads a lot better and I love all the texturing. It's really bothering me that the hilt of the sword isn't casting a shadow on the hand under it. I am sure you could work on this for another 60 hours and not be completely satisfied, but I still say its one of the best things you've done.

Shoulder pads aren't canonical, and the sword looks like a dagger... The thing I really likeis her hair.

(no they're really not and the sword should be longer but I was going to stab my eyes if I worked on this any longer thank you for the favourite. >_>)

THE HAIR WAS FUN TO PAINT!!!! ... like three layers.

I have a tutorial. >_>

Um, well, I paint like everything on one single layer, 'cause Ima too lazy to fuck with layers + they slow down the program you paint in + the image becomes really big (in mBs).

Hail to the Emperor of the Holy Terra! And hail to the great artist Jia. I love the detail of the armor, it shows reflection both a close and more distant light source. The textured and wear is well done, it shows that she both maintains and makes good use of the armor. She is obviously battle harden, and while I think honor may be important to her, I think she is one who considers fighting fair a luxury she doesn't have and its something that the demons of the warp and other enemy's of the Emperor don't deserve. She does not fear death, and failing is unacceptable. I think the weather was a good decision, it creates the tension that a very unpleasant battle is about to begin, the hair and cape very well reflects that as well as her weapon at ready. I would dare say that this is your best work yet. I can see the proportions are correct, the lighting sources carefully considered even on the face when the blue tint of the sword slightly shows. If the eyes were big enough, I would have liked to see what she is facing in the reflection, but maybe some day a part two.

<3 You leave the best comments. I would have to say that this is the most involved piece I've ever created, and it was a massive effort on my part. I don't like spending 60 hours on a single image, but something in the obsessive part of my brain snapped and said YOU MUST DO WARHAMMER ART... which requires a lot of time, patience and rendering.

There's a lot more that I wanted to do with this, but I got to the point where I was so burned out on it I just couldn't look at it anymore. D:

Thanks for the comment, and I'm glad you're enjoying the art. :D

It's your fault you know, I had to start looking at my Dark Heresy table-top rpg books again :-P I miss my days as an inquisitor psyker: gun fights, interrogation, raining blood, invoking the other perils of the warp. All in a good campaign session.
